Dr Verma did his medical training at University of New South Wales and worked for many years in the public and private hospital systems as a trainee in medicine, radiology and radiation oncology. He completed his first specialisation in Occupational and Environmental Medicine in 2009 and worked as an Occupational Physician for NSW Police, Fire & Rescue NSW, Defence and in private practice. He is skilled in the management and assessment of safety critical and safety sensitive workers as well as workers in other industries. As part of this specialisation he is also experienced in managing environmental hazards and risk communication.
Along the way Dr Verma completed an MBA from the top rated business school in Australia, the Australian Graduate School of Medicine. Subsequently he completed training in Psychiatry in the Northern Network in Sydney and at St John of God Hospital, Burwood. He qualified as a Psychiatrist in 2019 and worked in the public hospital system as a general psychiatrist as well as St John of God Hospital in Burwood and Gordon Hospital.
He uses a combined pharmacological and psychotherapeutic approach in achieving optimum treatment outcomes and particularly focuses on using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and schema therapy as part of his psychotherapy repertoire. Dr Verma emphasises building a strong collaborative therapeutic relationship with his patients and optimising functional and occupational function.
Dr Verma is the only dual qualified practising Occupational Physician and Psychiatrist on the east coast of Australia. His dual specialisations provide him with the expertise to provide balanced and evidence based assessments which take into account the person’s health status and their occupational background. In addition, his MBA gives him the ability to understand the perspective of the employer and business. With such a unique and specialised skill set, he is highly sought after for medico-legal reports and is able to provide combined physical and psychiatric assessments as well. He is SIRA accredited as a Permanent Impairment Assessor and provides psychiatric whole person impairment (WPI) ratings. Dr Verma does both plaintiff and defendant assessments. He provides reports for compulsory third party claims, workers compensation claims, fitness for duty assessments and total and permanent disability for insurers, workplaces, individuals and lawyers.
Dr Verma is also an examiner for the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (RACP) and a mentor for trainees in both the two specialisations. He is a published author as well with papers in various journals. He has spoken at various platforms to medical and mixed audiences on psychiatric care in general, comorbid physical and mental health disorders and mental health in the workplace.
